New support keeps people with diabetes healthy
People with diabetes are being encouraged to sign up to a new free programme that offers essential support and guidance to those newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as well as those already living with the condition.
Kernow Health, commissioned by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, has launched Diabetes and You, which offers both face to face and virtual sessions run with local GP practices and refresher courses for people who need ongoing support managing their diabetes and making healthier lifestyle choices.
There is also a specialist course for young people who have early onset type 2 diabetes and for people with a learning disability or autism. Family members and caregivers are also encouraged to attend.
Wendy took part in the programme and said: “We learn about what we eat and help each other. You’ve got to care for your body because you’re only here once, but life doesn’t end because you’re a diabetic.”
Complications from diabetes can include vision loss, heart disease and stroke, loss of feeling and pain (nerve damage) and foot problems such as sores and infections, which could lead to amputation if not treated.
However, with the right knowledge and support, it is possible to effectively manage diabetes and lead a fulfilling life.
Heather Taylor, senior educator for Diabetes and You, said. “We understand the challenges people face when living with type 2 diabetes. We’re encouraging these patients to start taking ownership of their diabetes, it’s a 2-way journey, 2-way conversation and 2-way decision making on any changes to their management.”
Dr Chris Reid, chief medical officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board said: “Complications from diabetes can be very serious and we really want to help people with diabetes take healthy steps to reduce their risk of developing a number of serious health problems. I would really encourage people to sign up and learn how they can manage the condition and live a fulfilling life.”
