Huge thanks to NHS staff as they respond to one of their busiest half term weeks

It’s been quite a week for NHS staff across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as they’ve been responding to one of the busiest half terms for some years.

Since last Friday (23-30 May 2025):

• almost 1700 people have come through the doors at the main emergency department in Truro

• more than 2000 people have attended one of the 10 minor injury units across the county and 460 have accessed the urgent treatment centre at West Cornwall Hospital

• GP surgeries have provided roughly 70,000* appointments, and

• around 1200* people have accessed prompt treatment more quickly through their pharmacy using services such as Pharmacy First 

* based on average weekly attendances

Chief medical officer at NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, Dr Chris Reid, said:

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been working in, or supporting, our health services this half term, its greatly appreciated. 

“I’d also like to thank our residents and visitors to the county, too, for being thoughtful when using our services. It’s true to say we’ve had a fair few people who’ve come to the emergency department and minor injury units who could have used pharmacies or phoned their home GP, but the majority have chosen well.

“This is why its more important than ever to remind everyone of our key message, which is to consider all the options for accessing health services. That really does help our teams focus their skills on those who need them most.”
